The M Resort Buffet is quite good – I sampled it opening night and came away impressed. I would go back.
On The Strip, the most popular buffets are typically Bellagio, Wynn Las Vegas, Paris and Planet Hollywood, probably in that order.

By March, all of City Center, save the Harmon Hotel, will be open – the entire complex opens in December 2009.
Regarding rates for multiple rooms, most hotels don’t give any breaks unless you’re booking for a larger group of at least 10 or more. A standard reservationist can help you try to book rooms that are adjoining or nearby, depending on your requirements.

Eh… probably not. It’s not all that warm in November, during the day or at night. Some hotels have some heated pools open, some also shut down pools to do annual maintenance.

Staying at the Riviera from October 28 through November 3 2009. Have been reading a lot of bad press about the Riviera’s money situation. How is the Riviera doing with this Missing loan interest payments?
I have contacted the hotel and they assure me that they will be around. Have you heard anything negative about the Riviera?

Many Las Vegas operators are currently in bad financial shape – the Riv is in good company in that regard.
Yes, they are having trouble but I would not be concerned about them closing their doors. Many many things would have to go wrong between now and then for that to happen. I would say it is very unlikely.
Even if they are forced to declare bankruptcy, no one wants to shutter the place and put thousands out of work. In other cases, properties have been allowed to remain open while they reorganize.

Second question first – I really don’t have any experience with childcare in Las Vegas for tourists, though I do know that those services are available. I can’t recommend one firm over another – you might ask the front desk at the hotel, they may have a firm they do business with regularly.
The hotel was built in two phases – the original rooms, in the Regency Tower, are smaller. If you can, avoid those rooms. Try for the ‘World Tower’ or ‘Premiere Tower’ for some extra square footage.

Great job on the site. I am a regular reader of your Two Way Hard Three blog.
I have a semi-technical question relating to access to poolside black jack – at the Wynn in particular. I stayed there last year and really enjoyed the poolside BJ set up they have at the Wynn pool.
I know from experience that they check room cards at entry and sometimes will even run through a machine to see that it is still valid (and not just your Red Card).
My understanding is that Nevada law requires all gaming establishments to be open to the general public. If so, it seems to me that if I want to play BJ by the pool and not use the pool itself, the Wynn must grant me access.
Do you know if this is the case?
Sorry for the technical question. I figure if you don’t know the answer, you will know someone who does. Thanks.

Good question.
You are correct, Nevada law requires public access to those games. You would be in the right to ask for entry to play blackjack.
The question is if the security guards are properly trained to recognize this – they may not be. I don’t know if anyone has tested this but if you do, please let us know!

Depending on what you’re looking for, kids can stay anywhere. You’ll find more of them at Excalibur and Circus Circus, both of which have made efforts specifically for families.
For buffets, the top tier is Bellagio, Planet Hollywood, Wynn Las Vegas and sometimes The Rio, depending on who you ask.
For fine dining, it really depends on what you’re looking for. Some of my favorites are Delmonico (The Venetian), Carnevino (The Palazzo), Botero (Encore Las Vegas), Wing Lei (Wynn Las Vegas), Sinatra (Encore Las Vegas), FIX (Bellagio), Okada (Wynn Las Vegas) and Bartolotta (Wynn Las Vegas).

There used to be Gilley’s but the New Frontier is now long gone. It may re-open at Treasure Island sometime in the future.
The only thing close would be ‘Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar and Grill’ at Harrah’s.

Hi Hunter, as always great site and much appreciated. I searched for this question before I submitted it, but I don’t think it’s been specifically addressed.
What are the differences and advantages/disadvantages of the “regular” Wynn and Encore vs. the Tower sections of those properties? In a similar vein, what are the relative differences and advantages/disadvantages of the Wynn vs. Encore (aside from the obvious fact that Encore is newer).
I can’t quite figure out from their website what special amenities are unique to each of the four (Wynn, Wynn Tower, Encore, Encore Tower). In your opinion which do you recommend?

Sure, happy to help.
First, Wynn Las Vegas vs. Encore in general – Encore is of course newer. The standard rooms are a bit larger and feature a more modern and up to date design. The standard bathrooms are, to my eye, identical in both towers.
Encore is billed as ’Wynn’s sexier younger sister’ and I think that fits – a hipper pool scene with integrated nightclub, smaller casino and overall more intimate footprint. The Encore Spa is a true work of art, a huge improvement over the original at WLV.
Personally, I prefer Encore for all of those reasons but I know people that prefer Wynn Las Vegas.
As you’ve said, both Wynn and Encore are split into ‘Resort’ and ‘Tower Suites’ areas. These ‘Tower Suite’ areas include all of the suites in the respective towers but they also include some standard rooms as well. Since I think anyone understands that a suite is bigger/better/nicer, let’s focus on these standard rooms in the ‘Tower Suites’ side of things.
In both towers, Tower Suites guests have a private check-in and valet area. I would argue that the difference between the Resort and Tower rooms at Wynn Las Vegas is more distinct than the Resort and Tower rooms at Encore. At WLV, Tower Suites guests have access to two additional pools. There’s no such amenity at Encore.
In both buildings, Tower Suites guests get additional perks with turndown, newspaper delivery, etc… There’s also a more personal touch with the service.
As for me, I find myself staying at Encore but in Resort rooms most of the time. I like that balance. My second choice would be Encore Tower Suites, then Wynn Tower Suites and then a Wynn Resort room.

How are the roman tower rooms at ceasers. We have stayed in the augustus tower and palace tower and were happy, but I am a little nervous about this older section of the hotel.

They’re smaller and less luxurious than either the Palace Tower or Augustus Tower, no doubt.
Fortunately, they have been re-worked in the not too distant past so the decor is not awful.
Some people staying there have reported that some rooms do not have normal doors on the bathrooms so if that’s important to you, you might want to request one (seriously).

Spent an hour reading through old questions, love it! My wife and I will be in Vegas for 4 nights starting December 19. She has comp rooms at any of Harrahs casinos, except Ceasars, so which one should we choose. We are there to gamble and be comfortable. We are not rollers for sure.

Any Harrah’s property besides Caesars? I would say Paris, the next notch down their chain. Good location, nice rooms, plenty of good restaurants nearby.
Plus, the giant City Center complex will be opening just a few doors down and across the street a few days before your trip – you’ll be nearby to check it out!

Depending on what you’re in the mood for, there are lots of options:
- Margaritavilla – right in the hotel, an outpost of Jimmy Buffet’s restaurant is known more for fun than food but they have both.
- STACK – at The Mirage, high end ‘bar’ food in a very hip atmosphere.
- FIX – at Bellagio, a cousin of ‘STACK’. Good food but not the least expensive option around.
- Grand Lux Cafe – at The Venetian, a HUGE menu in a restaurant used to serving large groups. Pretty reasonable prices.

‘Entertainment Capital of the World’? That’s really more of a marketing term than anything else but there are a ton of great options in Las Vegas – more than almost anywhere I can think of except maybe New York or London.
My favorite CDS shows are Love, Mystere, O, Ka, and Zumanity, in that order. I haven’t seen Believe yet.

I have been doing a lot of research on hotels in Vegas and have narrowed it down to the Palazzo and the Wynn Encore. I am looking at the entry level rooms such as the luxury suite(Palaz) and resort king luxury(Encore), what would you consider to be their strong points and weaknesses comparatively? What would be your personal choice and why? The rooms at the Encore look kind of small online but that could just be the pictures. Both have very nice rooms and you’ve picked two very strong contenders.
If that’s the only consideration, you might favor Palazzo over Encore. The Palazzo room is bigger, though both are luxurious.
I believe service, restaurants, casino and the pool are superior at Encore though. Service especially – it really shines. Also, I think the Encore spa is the best in Las Vegas.
I would pick Encore 10 times out of 10, assuming costs were about the same.

High end spas like those at Bellagio, Encore and Wynn will allow you to customize a high-end massage experience, assuming you’re willing to pay for it – having five people working on your wife will be very expensive.

Does anyone know how much a cypress suite at the Bellagio, Las Vegas costs? Are they only on the 4 – 13 floors? and do they all have a view of the fountains or just the 10th floor and higher?
Also what is the cost of the Grand Lakeview Suites and are they on the 29 -36 floors? If so what is in between the Cypress suites and the Grand Lakeview Suites ( in the middle section) from floor 14-29?

The rates vary – the Cypress Suites are technically under the authority of the casino marketing department for their players but are sometimes sold on the Web site or through the 800 number.
Your best bet is to call the hotel for the dates you’re interested in.
Cypress Suites are on floors 4-16. Rack rate is $600/night. They all have a lakeview, not as good on the lower floors obviously.
Grand Lakeview Suites are on floors 29-36, yes.
The floors between are the ‘Lakeview Suites’, in one and two bedrooms, between 2,075-2,694 square feet. Balconies on odd floors. They are similar to the ‘Grand Lakeviews’ but lower floors.

I’m not a cigar smoker but I asked a few trusted sources and here’s what they recommended:
- Casa Fuente (Caesars Palace)
- Davidoff shop at Mandalay Bay and then upstairs to catch the view at MIX
- Andres at Monte Carlo
Also, pretty much any good high limit lounge (Mirage, Bellagio, Wynn, Venetian) can be a good spot to have a smoke. The new High Limit Bar at Encore also has a modest selection of good cigars.

What is a better hotel overall between Flamingo and Ballys? Or is there another hotel you recommend somewhere around mid-strip?

I’d rate them about the same – older hotels with some remodeled rooms.
Location is about the same.
Bally’s has (slightly) easier access to the monorail, The Flamingo has a better pool.
I’ve tried both and if you’re looking for value, they’re great contenders.

We are planning on coming to Vegas for either Thanksgiving or Christmas. Two questions…When does the Bellagio change out the botanical gardens to the holiday theme? Second question, we are thinking of coming for a week so we don’t to spend a ton on a room, any suggestions of a hotel that is pretty affordable (under like 80 a night) and is on the strip?

Bellagio will typically change things out right after Thanksgiving – that week after the holiday, usually the middle of the night.
Rates vary quite a bit but I’d check into the following: Bally’s, Luxor, Monte Carlo, Bill’s Gambling Hall, The Flamingo and Harrah’s – all typically offer a very good value.

Going to the Vegas strip in September and while I feel comfortable playing reasonable limit tables, my companions are not real gamblers. I despise and will not play continuous shufflers at the BJ tables. Know a good place where the limits are low and there’s no shufflers? I was told to try Slots-of-Fun.

Between continuous shuffle and 6:5 payouts, 21 players have been hit hard by the recession and corporations padding the bottom line.
Slots-o-Fun was a good recommendation. I’d also check out Sahara across the street.
Have you considered going down to Fremont Street? You’ll typically find better games vs. The Strip.

My wife and I are planning a 4 night stay for our 30th anniversary towards the end of September. Last time to Vegas we stayed at Alladin and liked the room but the pool was kind of plain. We like mid-strip, a clean comfortable room, a nice pool area with enough chairs/loungers etc. We tend to eat around at different spots and we try slots at various places as well. What are your best suggestions?

If you want to be mid-Strip but don’t want to stay at Planet Hollywood (it used to be the Aladdin), I’d take a good look at Paris, Bally’s and maybe Monte Carlo, though the last one suffers from a good bit of construction noise from the nearby City Center pit.

Ok, I am going to the Bellagio on jul 30 & staying in a 2 bedroom penthouse suite we got for a ridiculously low price..which is fantastic…but it’s also what worries me! Our room is overlooking the pools, any chance there’s construction from CityCenter and Cosmo? Also which tower is best these days..the penthouse picture on the bellagio website is very modern with dark woods and light marbles..but any pics I find on the internet look like my grandmothers light blue powder room with dated tvs and such! Do they even have flatscreens or ipod players?? Of the properties that opened after Wynn i.e. encore, palazzo, M..would you most recommend to check out if i can manage to tear myself away from a bellagio black jack table?? Thanks again :-)

When it comes to the suites, I’d probably want to be in the Spa Tower over the original, Bellagio Tower. The trade off is noise from City Center next door but the rooms have less wear than the main tower in many respects. Since Bellagio owner MGM Mirage has been in serious financial hot water for the past months, they’ve really slowed renovation and repair projects at their hotels, Bellagio included. This is starting to show unfortunately. It’s not a disaster but it is a disappointment as Bellagio is a fantastic hotel. They did upgrade most rooms with new TVs and the iHome audio docks before the spending freeze went into effect.
Yes, both City Center and Cosmo are currently in a very active construction phase (less Cosmo than CC, the latter of which is running like crazy to make their December opening).
Of the more recent properties, my personal taste runs to Wynn stuff so Encore is at the top of my list (visit during the day to really see the impact of all the natural light in the casino). Palazzo has some good restaurants but the casino floor is pretty generic. There is a nice atrium transitional space between it and The Venetian. M Resort is worth visiting but only if it’s not a major bummer on your schedule. It has some nice touches but it’s pretty far out there.

The Strip has dining options at every level, from McDonald’s to the highest of high end. It really depends on what you want.
You’ll find food courts and the like at Monte Carlo, Excalibur, The Venetian, plus other low cost spots all through the hotels. There’s a McDonald’s across from The Mirage near Harrah’s, as well as a Denny’s.
Beyond that, some of the buffets can offer good value, depending on the time of day (dinner and weekends are more expensive).
Most hotels have a ‘coffee shop’ type restaurant that typically serves a variety of food at reasonable prices (though some are conspicuously expensive as well).

They do not have refrigerator access in the standard rooms. They can usually bring you a unit, based on availability, for a nominal fee.

Hey my girlfriend and I are in our mid 20’s and are making our first trip to Vegas and are staying at New York New York. I could probably write a hundred pages on this topic… First off, I’d recommend realizing up front that you won’t be able to see and do everything in just a single trip – don’t even try, you’ll just wear yourselves out.
You’ll be on The Strip so I encourage you to wander and see the top places: Bellagio, Wynn Las Vegas, The Venetian, MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay, The Mirage and Caesars Palace.
If you have time, head downtown to Fremont Street where you will find some of the older casinos. They’re smaller and in many cases can be friendlier. It’s a part of Vegas everyone should experience.
If your budget allows it, maybe pick one nice restaurant to visit. For steak, try Delmonico (The Venetian), Carnevino (The Palazzo) or SW (Wynn Las Vegas).
In general, just have a good time. That won’t be hard.

There was never a site or funding so this project wasn’t very real in my opinion.

Hi! I’ll go to LV with my neighbour in September 09. We’ll stay at Encore. I’m 19 and my friend 24 and we are form Europe. Are there any restrictions for me in Encore nightclubs? Ok, I know that I’m not allowed to dring and gamble, that’s fine, but minimum age for pool-parties and nightclubs at Encore?

You have to be 21 to enter any Las Vegas nightclubs or to ‘loiter’ on the casino floor.
Encore has two pools and one is supposed to be 21+ but I that’s loosely enforced while the nightclub and casino rules are heavily enforced.

Is there a way I can email the Flamingo directly? I just returned from Las Vegas two days ago, and while I totally enjoyed the gambling part of the Flamingo, I was extremely dissatisfied with the buffet in the Paradise Cafe. The price definitely DID NOT match the the quaklity of the food. I am not trying to be a pain the the posterior about it but I think some of these buffets begin the rest on reputation instead of quality assurance which was definitely the case here. Your suggestion as to how I would go about contacting them about this would be greatly appreciated.

In my experience, while you can often find email addresses for the resorts, real USPS mail has the greatest impact.
I’d recommend writing a letter to the Food and Beverage VP (just address it to that position at The Flamingo) and make sure you note you are CCing the President.

Traditionally Las Vegas is not big on fireworks for July 4th. The local neighborhoods typically do them but there hasn’t been a big event on The Strip like you’d see on New Years Eve.
This year, I believe both Mandalay Bay and the M Resort will host fireworks – you might consider traveling to either hotel to check them out. I think Mandalay Bay is having an event at their pool for people to watch.

Hi Robert,
Any of the major Vegas hotels should be able to recommend a minister or alternatively you could select one from the local community yourself, if denomination is important to you.
As far as in-room dining, all Vegas hotels have it but the quality and cost ranges significantly. Typically, the higher quality places are the more expensive ones. Even in that realm though, the room service is not always good.
I’ve had very good (restaurant quality) room service at both Wynn Las Vegas and Encore. Bellagio also has good in-room dining. Some hotels that you might think would have good room service, such as The Mirage and The Venetian, have mediocre food in many cases.

I would make sure that Red Rock Canyon is on your list and maybe Hoover Dam – they are in opposite directions so each would make a good trip of 3-4 hours depending on how long you linger. If you want to go further out, consider Valley of Fire.

We are thinking about coming to Vegas over Thanksgiving. Anything we should be aware of that weekend? With the economy down still, will there be deals like there is now at that time?

As far as deals go, you never know. I always tell people – do NOT wait to book. Book now, lock in the good rates. Most hotels have pretty liberal cancellation policies (check first) so you can make changes if need be.
Turkey day is more popular in Vegas than you might think – there are usually medium sized crowds.

hunter! how you doing my man? i hope your as as hip to primm as your are the vegas strip,so here i go, i’m staying in primm in a few week’s but before i book i thought i’d ask you for some feed back first, i’m going to be too picky about where i stay, after all it’s just primm, all i’m concerned about is that my 2 kid’s and my wife have a good time so witch of the 3 casino’s would be best for us. i’m not worried about how pretty the room’s are or what kind of view i’m looking at, i’m looking for kid’s rides,arcades,movie theater’s, i was thinking buffalo bill’s would be a nice fit, what do you think? thank’s.

Staying in Primm? That’s something I’ve never done. I’m sure you have a reason though.
I believe that Buffalo Bill’s is generally considered the best. It’s the one with the giant roller coaster – depending on how old your kids are and if they’re into that stuff, it could be a fun distraction. I think your instinct is correct.

I am staying at the Paris in early August in a comped room. Do I check in at the VIP area or the regular check in? Also is the Price is Right ticket price of $49.95 worth the experience and do you get anything other than the show for that price?

Where you check-in depends on what your host and/or offer said – if they didn’t specify VIP then you probably need to go to the normal line.
Regarding The Price is Right – it’s pretty much what you would expect. If you’re a fan of the TV show and that sounds fun to you, you’d probably dig it. I have had other readers say it was a lot of fun. The cost of the ticket is for the show only.

Ah, well I’ve personally seen the Wynn Fairway Villas but never the original ‘Apartment Villas’ at Wynn Las Vegas. One nice thing about the Fairways that you won’t find at Encore is the ability to go outside and look out over the golf course. It’s a really nice way to unwind.

Thanks very much. There are a few Mexican places. Isla (Treasure Island), T&T (Luxor), Diablos (Monte Carlo) and Dos Caminos (Palazzo) come to mind immediately. I don’t think any of these are open for breakfast though.
For years there was very little Mexican on The Strip. Fortunately, with the above this has improved a good bit.

Sure, what do you want to know specifically? A friend of mine got a tour and relayed back. I stuck my head in but haven’t been able to see them in person yet – that’s scheduled for July.
They’re super-large, luxurious apartments located on the Strip side of the Encore tower. Some are two levels with up to four bedrooms.
