The Las Vegas nightclub scene is basically totally focused on attracting people 21-35. That said, if you’re into that kind of stuff (loud music, crowded clubs, sweaty people), there’s no reason why you couldn’t go check them out. For a different environment, the MIX lounge (atop THEHotel at Mandalay Bay), the Fontana Lounge (on the lake at Bellagio), or the wine bar at Onda (The Mirage). Beyond the above, even the ‘ultra-lounges’ in Las Vegas are geared towards younger patrons.

Actually, all of the places on the list from that old response would still be on my list today. Good spots, especially Fontana.
As far as clubs for dancing without bottle service… A couple of years ago, it was 100% true. These days, it’s probably 90% true. Despite the economic conditions, the most popular clubs have only slightly relaxed these rules.
You can get into top spots like XS, The Bank and Tryst without reserving a table for bottle service but the lines are usually pretty long on top nights.
I have noticed shorter lines at places like Blush, the boutique nightclub at Wynn Las Vegas.

In light of MGM’s & Harrah’s finantial problems, do you think we will begin to see a move towards smaller casino companies allowing for more compitition?

Hopefully – in my book, that would be a good thing.
I think it’s safe to say that the major casino conglomerates will probably not make it through this in the same configuration – MGM Mirage has already sold TI and other properties may be next.
I think having more owners would be a good thing. We’ll see.

Just a few quick questions….If you had the choice between a Cypress suite at the Bellagio and an Executive Suite at Wynn which would you choose and why? We usually stay at the the Tower suites at the Mirage but are looking for a change.
Last question is do you have any clue when Ceasars will have their pool deck open and if there will be any new pools opening with this remodel?

I’ve never stayed in a Cypress Suite @ Bellagio, though I have always been curious. It’s cool because it is there at the very center of the floor but it is a junior suite in that the bedroom and living room are not separate – the same as the Executive Suite at Wynn Las Vegas… Now, the WLV suite gives you access to the Tower Suites amenities – separate lobby, two additional pools, etc… The Tower Suites service is arguably some of the best in town and while I have nothing against Bellagio, other than the novelty of the unique Cypress room, I’d probably be at WLV.
Caesars pool deck opened March 1st, though some parts are closed due to construction that will be continuing for several months.

Well, you’ve got tons of choices. These days, check out the following:
- JET (The Mirage)
- XS (Encore)
- Tryst (Wynn)
- Moon (The Palms)
- LAX (Luxor)
Lots of good choices in town and they should all be busy for NCAA. The ages range and you’ll find both younger and older women, based on my experience.

Hunter, long time fan!
I have been to Vegas a number of times over the last 5 years. This year I planned a bacholer party for 8 buddies. I booked the Mirage and am excited because I have never stayed there. What can I expect at the Mirage and what could I get for the 20.00 trick? (I know not to expect anything but what should I ask for?). We wanted to play some golf but didnt want to spend 300.00 on greens fees. Any suggentions? Thanks so much for a great site! Cheers, Scotty

I think you’ll like The Mirage. The recent room and restaurant renovations added a lot to the property.
Regarding tipping at check-in, you might see if you can get into a ‘Tower Deluxe’ room – higher floors, private elevator, bigger bathroom.
As far as golf, maybe check out Tuscany Golf Club which often has inexpensive rates.

We’re getting married in May, and will probably go for Taste of Wynn menu at Bartolotti outside in cabanas. Would you recommend this?
After the dinner, we would like to go to a bar/lounge, preferably in Wynn/Encore or close-by (no taxi).
Do you have any suggestions? And is it possible to reserve a table for 12-14 people at bars&lounges (without the expensive bottle service)?

Bartolotta is a fantastic restaurant and the ‘Taste of Wynn’ promotion that the hotel is running is an incredible deal for fine dining. I’d highly recommend the restaurant.
Sitting outside is great if the weather is nice.
As far as bars go, depends on what you want. Basically you have a choice – something like the ‘Eastside Lounge’ at Encore, which is a sit down, informal type place, ‘Blush’ at Wynn, which is a ‘boutique nightclub’ (no dancing) or the big daddy nightclubs, Tryst (Wynn) or XS (Encore). Typically, you cannot reserve tables without bottle service, no.

I am going to Vegas this summer (09)with all my friends because we all turned 21 this year. We want to stay in a nice “Vegas” hotel and get the full Vegas experience but not spend too much money. We would like to be in the middle of “all the action” on the strip and we are not sure what hotels would be best for 21 year old college students to get the most of all their money and have the most fun in Vegas.

I’d take a look at the following places and see how the rates look:
- Planet Hollywood
- Mandalay Bay
- Encore
- The Mirage
Now, Encore might be too spendy but they’ve been having a lot of deals so its worth checking.
All of the above are on The Strip and have a good pool scene.
If they all end up being too pricey, the next tier down would probably be Monte Carlo, Luxor or Bally’s.

Great site..very informative and very helpful too. You helped me with info on rooms at the Paris a few years ago and I’m going back again in June. Are the “P” rooms still there? Yes, they still have the ‘P’ rooms at Paris Las Vegas. That’s the most common upgrade for folks with regular rooms – upgrading to a suite without paying for it is very rare.

It’s all relative. Nothing wrong with Paris per se – I’ve stayed there several times and never had any seriously qualms. The location is excellent and there are several good restaurants on site and nearby.
If you’re getting a good deal at Paris, I’d say keep it. I’m sure they will take good care of you.

Hi my friends and I go to vegas every year (ages 27-32)first time we stayed at the Treasure Island, then the Mirage, both very fine and all but we were wondering if the palms is as fun as promoted on tv?.. we enjoy the pool party atmosphere but don’t really like the idea of being that far off the strip… Is the caesars pool scene any good ? ? any suggestions??

The Palms is a very popular place, yes. With their more recent expansions, there are a larger number of rooms to choose from and a bunch of nightlife.
It’s not really all that far from The Strip – just a few minutes in a cab.
You should give it some thought – you might really love it.
Caesars pool is currently being remodeled so if your trip is in the next few months, I wouldn’t pick it as my destination.

Not really… The New Frontier used to have a cowboy bar, Gilley’s, but that’s long gone now.

A few but nothing too huge. SHOWEST is in town, which is a big film convention. Could end up seeing some actors and actresses.
Slots-O-Fun – low limit gambling joint located next to Circus Circus… The smallest casino on The Strip. Sorta a grind joint but it depends on what you’re looking for in a casino.

He can walk through the casinos but not linger on the gaming floor or in any of the bars.
They are not lax in enforcing these rules, they are state law.

If there are any nice things about the current economic situation it is that Las Vegas hotels are offering some of their best rates ever. Consider checking out the following hotels: The Mirage (great pool, good club – JET), Encore (often really expensive but have been throwing off some great deals lately – the newest place in Vegas), THEHotel (part of Mandalay Bay but with bigger rooms), or finally Planet Hollywood (great Center Strip location, often excellent rates). Shop around a bit with those names and see if you find what you like – I’d be happy staying at any of those places.
As far as clubs go, I’d probably say Tryst (Wynn Las Vegas), XS (Encore Las Vegas), The Bank (Bellagio) or Pure (Caesars Palace), though there are a bunch of other really popular places in town as well.

Not really – things are pretty ‘normal’ right now other than the economic situation has impacted Vegas quite a bit. You’ll find restaurants with slashed hours but in many cases also far far better deals.
This is still a great time to go for people that can. Less crowded, etc…

party of 3 going to Vegas for the first time 5 days early June.
We are not on a tight budget nor an extravagant budget. We are interested in a hotel that is neither party central nor too quiet and boring.
Looking at reviews of the Signature at MGM seems positive but notice that different management companies run sections of the same property…what is that all about?
Read somewhere about hotels that offer an “executive floor (room)” where for an additional fee ($60) you get breakfast, cocktails and snacks on a specific floor of the hotel. Can you tell me more about that and which hotels offer this?

The Signature is a condo-hotel so the units are owned by individuals and then allowed back into a ‘rental pool’ to be brokered by MGM or in some cases, other firms (though I think this is actually against the rules). Signature is fine, only issue is its location. Way back from The Strip, it requires a bit more walking than some other spots so if that’s a problem, be aware.
Some hotels do have ‘concierge’ floors with added amenities. Places like Monte Carlo, The Venetian, Palazzo, and others offer this, typically along with nicer/upgraded rooms.

We are planning a 5 day visit to Vegas in June. I’ve never been to Las Vegas before and would like your advice on hotels. For three ladies looking to relax by the pool with a book, walking to explore the strip and shopping, we are considering the following: Mandalay Bay, Paris, The Mirage or the Four Seasons.
Any pros or cons I should be considering?

All are fine choices.
The Four Seasons is part of Mandalay Bay, located on higher floors. It has a separate check-in and pool, though you can use the Mandalay pool as well. It’s quiet and doesn’t really feel like a typical Las Vegas hotel-casino – some people really like that. One downside to The Four Seasons or Mandalay Bay is the location – it is the far South end of The Strip so walking, cabbing or tramming is required to get anywhere.
The Mirage has recently re-done all of its guest rooms and brought in new restaurants. It’s a place I always consider when I’m looking for a place to stay. Nice pool, good location and typically reasonable prices.
Paris has a great location in the middle of The Strip but it’s probably lower down on my list than The Mirage or Mandalay Bay would be.

Hi, we’re a bunch of 21 year olds trying to have fun in Vegas on our spring break. We’re a bit low on budget and we booked two places for six nights so we can decide.
Excalibur for $708 total
Stratosphere for $353 total.
Is it worth it getting a cheap place on the strip like Tropicana or Excalibur is it more worth it to go for the Stratosphere.
Will the traveling costs going from Stratosphere to the strip be too expensive?

The Strat would be a fine place in terms of quality, the only issue would be getting around, as you guessed. Other places you might want to look, that are a little closer but still not too expensive:
- Sahara
- Riviera
- Circus Circus
- Tropicana
- Imperial Palace
You might be able to avoid travel costs @ The Strat if you’re willing to walk a lot.

I curious to see if you had any insight with respect to the economic impact on room rates. I know we’re already seeing some of the lowest room rates available. But my inquiry is specific to Skylofts at MGM Grand, the lowest I’ve seen their rooms offered at $510.00, do you foresee their rates dropping sub $500 or $400/nt?

Hi PK,
It’s hard to say. A premium product like Skylofts, especially with so few units, is a little bit different than even the thousands of rooms at Wynn Las Vegas or Encore.
Anything is possible and I encourage you to keep checking but my experience is that the highest end rooms are sometimes not significantly discounted.

Hoping you can clarify something for me. I’m booked into Caesars from March 20-24. I just heard that the pool complex is being renovated. What I can’t get a straight answer on is whether the whole complex will be closed while I’m there or only a portion of it.
The Caesars website says the Temple of the Gods complex will be closed. Is that the entire pool complex or just a part of it?
Sitting by the pool is a huge part of my trip so I’m anxious to figure out if I need to change hotels.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, the pool complex is being renovated.
My understanding is that some pools open March 1st with some other parts of the area opening up at the end of the month. It sounds like some part of the pool area will be open, though construction is on-going and space will be limited.

I’ve stayed at the MC a few times but not since the recent renovation. After the fire in January of 2008, they accelerated renovation projects in the hotel.
As far as construction, it is in FULL swing next door. If you are sensitive to noise, I would request a room facing the other way. It can be loud and they typically work 24×7. Only a single tower at Monte Carlo.
The pool re-opens mid-March so you should be able to use it if you’re so inclined.

Hey Hunter, as always love the site you have been a big help the past few years I have been reading it. We got married at Mandalay Bay last July and the site was a big help planning the party and activities for our guests
My husband and I are staying at the Mirage from May 5 to May 12 in a one bedroom Tower suite. (This is our lucky 7th trip to LV!) Do you know if these rooms have been renovated yet? On a related question, we could get a V suite at THEHotel for about the same price. I haven’t stayed at THEHotel or in a Mirage suite, so I don’t know which is better. My preference is to stay at Mirage because of location, but I like the Mandalay property for the spa and some restaurants. Anyway, I was just wondering if there is anything about either of those two suites that should tip the scales one way or the other.
Also, I’m a big foodie and was wondering about restaurant recommendations; I can’t swing the biggie (Robouchon) because the husband won’t pay $1000 for one meal (though I would), but I’m allowed to make a few high end reservations and a couple more moderately priced. Also by way of background we are trying to hit restaurants at different casinos so we can spend the evening there gambling/clubbing.
For moderately priced I was thinking Social House, Rao, Bouchon. For more expensive I was thinking Alize, Bartoletta, and maybe Mix, although I’ve heard “mixed” reviews (LOL). Any other thoughts/recommendations? What about a nice restaurant at Bellagio; I know their selection hasn’t changed much, is it getting dated?
For what it’s worth, as my two cents, one of the main reasons I like to stay at the Mirage is the Carnegie Deli. The only place I can get eggs with a side of hot dogs at any time of the day!

The Tower Suites have not been renovated. Originally the plan was to have them done by now but all room renovation projects across MGM Mirage properties have been put on hold due to economic issues.
THEHotel is a nice property but I agree that the location at The Mirage is better. The suites at The Mirage, while a little dated in terms of decor were built to be the very top of the Vegas heap in their day – they’ve been generally kept up well and are very nice rooms. The spa at The Mirage was re-done last year and is also very nice.
For food… Social House is more trendy than foody. I’d probably not include that on my short list. Bouchon is a good pick. I haven’t tried the LV Rao’s yet.
Alize often gets panned. Nice view but I’m not sure the food holds up. Bartolotta is a winner every time – great stuff. You might also look at Sinatra (Encore). Great food. MIX was a terrible meal for me twice. I won’t be going back, though the chef has changed.
At Bellagio, Yellowtail is quite good (sushi). Picasso is always a hit too. Sensi is a more reasonable joint with a lot of variety on the menu. Also open for lunch.

I am coming out to Vegas for a conference at the LVCC in the April. I will be out there for 6 nights. My wife will be with me for about half the time. I am considering Mirage, Caesar’s & Mandalay Bay. The wife likes Mandalay because of the pools/beach so that she has stuff to do while I’m gone during the day. My concern with Mandalay is whether it is too far from the action mid-strip. She thinks it will be no problem to walk up LV Blvd and check out different casinos, restaurants, bars, etc. We also want to make sure the rooms are nice and spacious.
Do you have any thoughts on these properties? Pros/cons? Which one would you recommend?

It’s really not that bad of a walk from Mandalay Bay – there’s a tram that will take you to Excalibur and you can then walk across the street to MGM Grand and hop on the monorail or just walk from there.
All the places you mentioned are nice spots. With regards to Caesars, there are several different towers and if you can, you want to be in the Palace or Augustus Towers – they are far newer and the rooms aren’t old and tiny.
Of the places you mentioned, I’d probably pick The Mirage – I like it for its location, food options and service though I really feel like you’d be happy at any of them. The Mirage does also have a nice pool. The quality of the rooms is about the same between all three joints.

Depends on who you ask. For casino execs and workers, the mood is a bit somber. For the guests that do make it out, they still seem to be having a blast – there are less people which means less lines. Some restaurants are cutting some of their hours but it’s not a huge problem. Have fun! Final Four weekend should be relatively crowded.

Hi Hunter, I am new to this site as I am in the process of planning a first time trip for my boyfriend and I to Vegas. The first big question I have is what type of hotel would you recommend for us to stay in? I have heard so many different opinions that it has ended up confusing me than helping me. There are indeed killer deals available right now. FIrst off, I’d say you want to stay on The Strip. Even though there are fun hotels like The Palms and the Hard Rock nearby, The Strip is where all the action is.
Some of the best deals right now can be found at Luxor, Monte Carlo, Bally’s, and Planet Hollywood. If you want to bump it up a notch, also check out Mandalay Bay and The Mirage.
For shows, if you want to laugh, maybe consider Penn and Teller at The Rio? Irreverent, fun magic with some comedy. Wayne Brady’s show at The Venetian is also popular for comedy.
If you want to see a spectacle, consider Mystere at Treasure Island by Cirque du Soleil.

You’ve mentioned that the group you are with sometimes affects whether you are carded or not. I’m 20 (look mid 20s) but my husband is 40, do you think that would give any weight, or the lame “I lost my ID” routine?
How do most hotel/casinos feel about photography? (inside, outside, etc) I have plans on doing a photoset in one of the rooms but would like some additional shots of the location.

I do think the group does have an impact, yes. Some places card everyone, others are way more lax. If they ask for the ID, I think the jig is up – I doubt the ‘I lost it’ routine will work. Act confident and many will simply not ask.
As far as photography, the general rule is no photos of gaming areas. Almost all casinos have this rule, typically to protect patrons that might not want to show up in someone’s Internet photo. I’ve found that if you’re discreet, it’s not that big of a deal.
I’ve never seen anyone get upset about taking photos outside.

I’m going to Las Vegas for the first time, to see a Puscifer concert at the Pearl. Unfortunately, I’m only 20. Are there any decent clubs around that I can get in? Besides shows and food, what’s a girl like me to do?

Pretty much all the clubs are 21+ and unlike some of the other lounges and bars, they are more diligent about ID checking – sorry!
As far as room choices, Planet Hollywood has reasonably priced rooms in a good location with very large bathrooms and bath tubs. Many hotels have larger suites with huge tubs but they are typically more expensive.

hellow Hunter, i,m staying at excalibur march 6,what can i do to recieve offer’s from the casino’s while i’m there? i know the casino’s have a player’s club you have to join or something,how much do you have to play to recieve offer’s in the mail? i heard at certain casino’s you dont have to play at all you just join the club and that’s it. please enlighten me, i’d like to know before i go.much appreciated!!!Vegas Mate @ RateVegas answered:
Yes, joining the players clubs will put you on the mailing list and you should start seeing at least some offers. They will give you a club card with your name on it.
These days, even smaller amounts of play are getting some attention – make sure you use your card when you play.
Also, the casinos are starting to use new technologies like Twitter to send out breaking info on specials. Excalibur is on Twitter here

HI, we are coming to Vegas in August (yes I know its hot, as everyone keeps telling us!!!!) but we are coming with our 12yr old son so it had to be in the school holidays. There doesn’t seem to be many questions as to what there is for children. We are coming from the UK and so want to visit the Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon etc and are not big gamblers, this maybe our only visit. Which are the best rides to go on with kids?, and what are the waiting times like in August?. Are the restaurants child friendly?We are staying in a timeshare off strip in the Worldmark Tropicana, any tips? Do we need a car as the hotel has regular shuttles? My husband loves shopping, so which is best for that? We would love to see a show, so is there one that you would recommend seeing with children?

Yes, we don’t really focus on kid-friendly activities on this site.
You might try roller coasters at the Circus Circus Adventure Dome and at New York New York. You’ll have some waiting in lines, sure. Typically it’s not excessive though.
As far as restaurants, some are kid friendly and others prohibit them – mostly fine dining establishments and not all that many of them have that policy.
You really can’t walk from where you’re staying to The Strip easily so if you do not have a car, you’ll be limited to the shuttles and taxicabs, which are easy to get on The Strip. If you plan to see Hoover Dam you might want to consider having a car – it might make it worthwhile.
As far as shopping, there are tons of options, depending on what you’re looking for. The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace, Miracle Mile at Planet Hollywood and Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian all have a large selection of stores. The upscale Esplanades at Bellagio, Wynn Las Vegas and Encore all have the high end brands.
As far as a show, kids might like Cirque du Soleil so perhaps Mystere at Treasure Island would be a good choice.

Thx for info on Suncoast . . . a final question for this trip re restaurants — we’d like to go to one of the “best of the best” places in town and are considering Alex vs Le Cirque. Any others to consider? The atmosphere is nearly as important as the food. Thanks.

As far as the dinner, yes, most restaurants have a private room. If you’re at Encore you might want to look into Sinatra, Botero, SW Steakhouse or Bartolotta – all inside the Wynn complex.

I vastly prefer The Mirage over MGM Grand – better location, better pool and rooms that were just totally renovated this past year. The Mirage is 20 years old but has seriously upgraded their game.

I would book now. These are some of the lowest rates I’ve ever seen, due to the current economic conditions.
If you book directly with a hotel, almost all of them let you reduce your rate if they drop prices in the future. Check when you make your reservation.

Hi – for the first time, I will be staying off-strip at the Suncoast in April. I have seen positive reviews, but they’re from years ago . . . any idea if the property is still held in high regard? The rates are quite reasonable, even for off-strip. I have also heard that their video poker has great payouts. Any insider info you might have would be appreciated. Yes, the Suncoast has kept itself up – it’s well maintained and very clean.
Many of its customers are locals that are sophisticated about their casino games, thus higher payouts are typical – they are required to maintain the customers.

Generally, yes.
You’ll have no problems walking around during the day – there are lots of people around.
I would be careful about walking further north, though there’s really nothing there to walk to – everything you want to see will be south.
The Strip is extremely safe in general, though use common sense – you’re better off walking when there are other people around. Fortunately, that’s true almost 100% of the time.

There’s a lot of construction going on right next door to Monte Carlo at City Center, thus if construction noise bothers you, you might want to be a little further away at New York New York until those City Center resorts open in December.

My husband and I are staying at the Bellagio in late May. I have heard that “O” is the show we shouldn’t miss and I would love to see it. My question is: How far in advance should I purchase the tickets? I’ve seen on certain sites that some shows have discounts. Do “O” tickets ever go on sale? Should I wait until closer to May, or am I running the risk of the show selling out?

I would recommend booking tickets for ‘O’ as soon as possible. It’s one of the most popular shows in town and frequently sells out.
‘O’ is rarely discounted, due to its popularity.

Going in April and would like to see a dinner show. Have already seen Tina & Tony’s Wedding and considering Sopranos Last Supper at Greek Isles Casino. Can’t find any reviews or a seating chart. Dinner is prior to show at the Greek Isle Rest. 2nd question. Do you know of any good shows we should consider downtown. It doesn’t have to be a dinner type.

The Soprano’s Last Supper has been popular enough to hang around for a few years, which in terms of Las Vegas entertainment, is a very good sign. I’ve heard from others that have seen the show and they enjoyed it – if you like dinner theater, it’s one of the only options.
There aren’t a whole lot of shows Downtown as not a lot of the hotels have showrooms. In April, Gordie Brown will be back at the Golden Nugget – he’s a singer/impressionist that has a large following.
There’s also the ‘Marriage Can Be Murder’ show at the Four Queens. It’s a dinner theater show, like Tina & Tony’s Wedding.

Hi
We are getting married at the Wynn in Vegas in April this year.
We are looking for a restaurant to go to in the early evening that has a lively atmosphere where we can have a dance and a great time and ideally some good american style cusine.
We have about 15 guests ranging in age from 16 – 50.
We are also looking for a quiet bar before the restaurant where we can have some champagne and maybe some finger food.
Does anyone have any good ideas? Any help you can give will be very much appreciated.

First off, congratulations. If you haven’t been to Wynn Las Vegas, I think you will agree that it is a beautiful spot, especially to get married.
I’ll take the bar question first… Your best bet is probably ‘Parasol Up’, located just off the casino at Wynn Las Vegas. They have a good sized seating area with full bar service. Alternatively, the ‘Eastside Lounge’ on the new Encore side of the building has seating next to large windows that overlook the pool. Either one would be a good choice based on what you seem to be looking for.
For the restaurant, the only bit that threw me a little was the prospect of dancing, just because many places don’t have space for that sort of thing. With 15 people though, you may want to take advantage of the private dining rooms many of the restaurants have. I’d recommend taking a look at the following:
- Botero Steak – Located inside Encore at Wynn Las Vegas, Botero is a new restaurant with a very lively atmosphere. It has indoor and outdoor seating, weather permitting.
- Tableau/An American Place – this restaurant is located in the Wynn Las Vegas Tower Suites lobby. It’s currently called Tableau but by the time you arrive, it may have already been transformed into An American Place. A bit quieter than Botero but the food has always been excellent.
- Country Club – Overlooking the golf course’s 18th hole, this is a North Carolina style steakhouse. The food is very good and the views are unmatched.

The pool at New York New York is closed through March 2009. That’s not uncommon for Las Vegas, as it is fairly cold in the Winter.
