I’m trying to find some good seafood/steakhouses on the strip. What are your thoughts on the Rosewood Grille? or The Range at Harrahs?

I’ve not eaten at either but they come highly recommended from a trusted friend that has. From what I understand, the Rosewood Grille can sometimes be quite expensive… Also, have you considered Delmonico at the Venetian? Excellent.

My fiance and I will be making our 1st visit to LV in Sept. for our honeymoon. Staying at the Stratosphere, when going to the various casinos do HAVE to get players cards/comp cards (whatever they’re called)at each of them, or since most of our gambling will probably be at our hotel should we just get ’em for there?

You don’t have to get a card but if you plan to do any playing there, it can be a good idea… Sometimes just signing up will generate some deals being sent to you in the mail… Signing up usually only takes a few minutes… Also, there is a consolidation going on within the large casino companies to single cards for multiple properties. For instance, The One Club serves Mandalay Bay, Luxor, Excalibur, Monte Carlo, and Circus Circus… The Park Place Connection serves Caesars Palace, Paris, Ballys, Las Vegas Hilton and the Flamingo. Harrah’s Total Rewards covers Harrahs and the Rio and the newly announced Players Club from MGM Mirage currently only serves the Mirage but in the next 9 months will include Bellagio, Treasure Island, MGM Grand and New York New York.

If you stay somewhere off the strip, can you park at a strip hotel like Ceasars, then walk around to other hotels or do they have parking passes to identify hotel guests?

While there is nothing wrong with the Riveria per se, Harrah’s has a better location and somewhat nicer rooms. If you have a choice, Harrah’s might suit you better… Especially if your wife is concerned. ;-)

While it is true that Bally’s is not one of the newer resorts on the Strip, it is a great hotel. They actually just completed extensive rennovations to their guestrooms, so you should not be disappointed. Depending on the time of year and weekday vs. weekend, you most likely got a good rate.

I’m not sure if you mean a specific buffet. Generally, the best buffets are Bellagio, Paris, Rio, Aladdin, and Mirage.

Comps from sports books are usually hard to come by since you’re not really giving them much action (the built-in edge in other games like Blackjack and slots makes them more attractive for the casino).

Hi, I really have enjoyed reading all the questions and answers on your site, and yet I still have a question for you! We will be going to Las Vegas for a wedding in October (mid), and I have to bring my baby with me…(it will be 5 months old by then…)I am just wondering if you are allowed to bring strollers through casinos…My husband and I aren’t really gambling types, so if we played anything, it would be the computerized versions of blackjack etc. Nothing major, but I really have no idea if I can play for 5 minutes while holding my baby!
It’s going to be one dull Las Vegas experience if I can’t go anywhere with the little one! (The baby is due May 3rd, 2002)
So, although I don’t expect to spend much time playing the slots, I really don’t know the policy on babies in Las Vegas! Any info you could provide I would really appreciate! Thanks!

Some Las Vegas casinos do not allow strollers unless you are a guest (Bellagio comes to mind)… Most have no stroller rules and you’ll be able to move through them without trouble… Nevada law states that no one under 21 may loiter in a gaming area… To be honest I’m not sure exactly how they would handle a 5 month old… Technically not legal but I kinda doubt you’d be given a real hard time…

Yes, there is a big difference in the rooms. The Palace Tower rooms are larger and nicer. If you have the opportunity, stay in one of them. As far as pools, Caesars pool complex is nicer than the MGMs.

Best hotel offers and some advice?

Hi – I am traveling to Vegas for the first time in June for 5 nights. As of now we are staying at the Mirage in a room with a pool/volcano view. I am thinking of possibly upgrading us to a petite suite for 5 nights as a surprise for my boyfriend. This suite comes with the “Royal Suite Service” which includes round trip limo service, invited guest check in, line passes to the buffet and the caribe cafe, priorty seating at any of the gourmet restaurants and shows at the Mirage, fresh flowers sent to the room, and a USA Today newspaper delivered to the room each day. It is their smallest suite, but it is still 800 square feet, has double door marble entry, wetbar with fridge, a guaranteed king bed, a sitting area, floor to ceiling windows with beautiful views of the city, a his & her bathrooms, hers has the oversized whirlpool tub and his has the large walk in shower.
Has anyone ever indulged in this suite? Is it worth it?? It will cost me $300 per night (includes taxes) which is a lot of money!! Does anyone have any idea what the chances are that the Mirage will reduce these prices more for June? We will be there from a Friday to Wednesday. We chose the Mirage because it has such a nice pool and heard the location is great for our first trip to Vegas. Are their better deals for suite/packages elsewear at just as nice a hotel with as nice rooms/pool/etc?
Also – I am debating about buying the Las Vegas Advisor membership. My parents are also going to Vegas end of this month and staying at Mandalay Bay – I figure I will give them some of the coupons as well. Does anyone feel the subscription is really worth it? We plan to relax, sit by the pool and have some cocktails, go to a few nice dinners and buffets, and maybe catch a show but nothing too pricey. We will gamble very minimally.

The suites at the Mirage are very nice. The tubs are large, the rooms are nicely appointed, the beds are comfy and the royal service is a nice touch… Not waiting in lines is priceless. If you enjoy quality and you want to splurge on something special, you’ll be quite happy in a suite at the Mirage. It is an experience.
As far as the LVA membership goes, I feel like it is worth it. I’m very happy as a subscriber!

Mirage Resorts buffets (Bellagio, Mirage, Treasure Island, and Golden Nugget) are famous for the bread pudding. The rumor is that it was Steve Wynn’s mothers’ recipie… Anyhow, I did see a posting that gave the instructions as below:
Serves 12 Yeild One 10" x 12" Pan
16oz Half and Half
8oz Wipping Cream
8 Fresh Eggs
1 1/4 cups Sugar
1/4 tsp. Vanilla Flavor
4 1/2 slices White Bread
1/2 tsp Cinnamon Powder
1 tsp Sugar
2 Tbl Raisins
Mix Well: Half and Half, wipping cream, eggs, sugar and vanilla. Arrange bread
on bottom of pan. Pour mix over bread. Mix 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon with 1
teaspoon sugar and sprinkle over bread. Spread raisins over top. Cover with
foil and bake in water bath at 400 degrees for 75 – 90 minutes.

I don’t know which car is larger, sorry. As far as which company usually has the lowest rates, this changes based on many factors and is hard to say definitively. I would shop between Dollar, Avis, and National for the dates you want and see who has the best rates.

The Mirage recently started a room rennovation project that will bring an updated look to all 2,700+ guest rooms. Expected to be complete sometime next year, construction starts in September.

The room rennovations at the Mirage are almost totally complete. That news item should have read September ’01, as that was when construction started. We stayed in a suite at the Mirage several weeks ago and it had not yet been rennovated, but it is my understanding that almost all guestrooms are done.

Most casino/hotels will comp a guests room charges if they play enough in the casino… “Enough” varies from hotel to hotel. At Treasure Island, to get a room comp you’d have to play at least 4 hours per day and be wagering at least $25 per hand to be considered for room comps. If you plan on playing at these levels, when you first sit down tell the dealer you’d like to be rated. If you play slots, sign up for a card with the slot club. Once you’ve put in some play, ask to see a casino host and they will tell you what you’ve earned. Good luck!

The best way to avoid lines is comps or line passes and off the top of my head I can’t think of any other way to bypass the lines… Line passes are MUCH easier to come by than buffet comps, since they cost the casino no money. To get a line pass, put in some time at one of the tables and make sure you ask nicely. You’ll usually get what you ask for… As far as coupons go, the best place to look are the free in-room magazines like Showbiz Weekly. If you travel to Las Vegas often, the Las Vegas Advisor sells a great coupon book called the PocketBook of Values.

I’ve been checking off and on for the last month or so to find the best rates for my June 9-16 trip to Vegas. I’d prefer a suite, and would like to know if the petite suite at Treasure Island is a good deal for $105. Compared to $170 at the Luxor/MGM, or $199 at Mandalay Bay. How are the suites at TI in comparison to to the other hotels mentioned. I really want to splurge… within budget.

Petite Suites at Treasure Island are like over-size versions of their guestrooms. If you define a suite as a large hotel room, you’ll be happy. If you want multiple rooms, etc… and a fun room to try, get a jacuzzi suite at Luxor.

This is the law of supply and demand at work… Since the weekends are so much more popular than during the week, room prices can sometimes rise dramatically. For good rooms at prices that won’t kill you, try: Ballys, Treasure Island, Luxor, and Harrahs.

Thanks for the kind words! I don’t know of an online map of the MGM Grand. If you call the hotel, they would probably be able to fax one to you. While the hotel is quite large, it really isn’t that difficult to navigate. The building is in a large “t” shaped layout and the different restaurants, etc… are clearly marked with overhead signs. The MGM Grand does have concierge service that can help you with ticket and restaurant reservations, etc… Good luck!

Have you seen the chapel in person? I would highly recommend that anyone particular about their wedding environment go to Las Vegas ahead of time and see the chapel, meet the staff, etc… That’s really the only way to know if what they offer is really what you’re looking for… That said, the Monte Carlo chapel is nice looking, and isn’t a dump.

The rooms at this hotel within a hotel are more like time-shares than normal hotel rooms. Most have full kitchens, etc… The amenities are limited but you do have the Flamingo near by…

The Excalibur would probably be a better choice, primarily because you are closer to several attractions right there on the Strip. The Hilton probably has nicer rooms, though not so much it would be worth switching for that reason. The Hilton will have less kids and less for kids to do, so Excalibur is probably a better bet for you here.

How important is it to you to stay on the Strip? If that is not of paramount concern, consider: Rio, the Palms, or Green Valley Ranch. If you do want to stay on the Strip, I would try the following to stay in your price range: Ballys, Paris, Aladdin, MGM Grand, Luxor, or Treasure Island. The pools at Ballys and TI are really nothing special (though Ballys seems to have the only pool deeper than 4 feet in Vegas), but the hotels are nice. Treasure Island is an especially good value. Have fun!

I recently booked a room at the Alladin for August 2002 without being aware about the bankruptcy. Have you heard how this has affected service? Should I be worried since the trip is a few months away? I also have the choice of staying at Paris Hotel. What do you think of Paris??

I have stayed at the Aladdin twice since the bankruptcy began. I can say that I have seen no degredation in service at all. In fact, they have been doing so well they haven’t had to borrow any money to finance their day to day operations. The Aladdin is a nice hotel and I think you’d enjoy your stay. Paris is another nice hotel, probably about the same in terms of quality when compared with the Aladdin.

I would consider the following mid-priced buffets: MGM Grand, Ballys, and the Flamingo. The best buffets are at Paris, Bellagio and Aladdin, but for dinner they can be up to $20/per person.

Well, this depends on what you mean by “okay”. There won’t be much for your teen-aged child to do at Ballys (or any many of the hotels). Personally, I think being a teenager in Las Vegas is the worst age… You’re too old for the little kid stuff and too young to gamble… It can be frustrating. If your child likes video games, check out Gameworks next to MGM Grand.

The last I heard, the casino at the Tuscany was not yet open. The hotel looks nice from pictures but I have not had a chance to see the rooms for myself. Since the hotel opened, there could be service issues as they may still be getting the “bugs” out. Still, it could be an excellent experience. I plan to explore it soon. It is within walking distance to the Strip, but at night the walk might be a little undesirable, depending on your age and if you feel comfortable walking in semi-lit areas at night.

Yes, $49 is a good rate for Excalibur. It is in a good location, near MGM Grand, NYNY, Luxor and the Tropicana. The hotel is similar in quality to a nice motel. The rooms are clean but they don’t offer a lot of extras. Excalibur has built a lot of its client base on folks that want to bring their kids. They are welcome at Excalibur.

Besides being far away, are the manor rooms at circus circus alright. Also, is it better to book a hotel room ahead of time or will ii get a cheaper rate if I make a reservation when i arrive in las vegas?

If you don’t mind distance, the manor rooms are fine. Very similar to Motel 6. No frills, but clean.
DO NOT WAIT UNTIL YOU GET TO LAS VEGAS TO MAKE A RESERVATION.
Despite all the stories in the paper about Vegas tourism being in a slump, the hotels usually run very close to 100% occupancy. Make your reservations before you leave or you might not find a place to stay.

Staying at the Flamingo next week and had a question about the upgrade trick. Is it best to try for an upgrade at the airport check-in or wait and attempt this at the front desk? (arriving at 9 P.M.) Also, since this is my first time staying at the Flamingo, what type of room (and location) should I ask for to get the most bang for my buck? To best honest, I’ve never heard of anyone succeeding with the $20 trick at the airport. I would wait until you get to the hotel just to be safe… As far as what type of room, see if you can get a “deluxe” room. These are slightly larger… The best view is probably either West towards Caesars or South towards Ballys, Paris, etc… Have fun!

I was thinking about staying at Circus Circus and the “manor” rooms are the cheapest. Are the manor rooms bad as most people say they are or are they OK. Otherwise I will pay a little more to stay in the tower.

The thing that most people dislike about the manor rooms is that they are located at the very back of the property… It is a long walk to the casino and even further to the Strip. It means that you really don’t get the experience of staying in a Strip hotel in Las Vegas… If you want to stay in a cheap room and don’t care about where it is, consider the Travelodge on the Strip. The rooms would be similar to Circus Circus’ manor rooms and the location (center Strip) is much better (closer to other casinos). Also, the Sahara and Stratosphere usually have excellent rates. Check them out.

Will the Luxor pool area be open in September (8-15)2002? Will there be a lot of kids there at this time of year?

Yes, the Luxor pool is open in September. The hotel usually doesn’t attract as many families as some other resorts, plus most kids will be starting school again in early September, so I would expect the volume of kids to be down.
