According to an article in today's LVRJ, MGM MIRAGE is looking at the possibility of extending the Mandalay Bay-Excalibur people mover all the way to Treasure Island, with a stop at Harrah's owned Caesars Palace.
Plans to have a Mirage Resorts tram that ran from Bellagio to TI were discussed several times under the 'Wynn Administration' but never got off the ground.
This would be a direct blow to the floundering Las Vegas Monorail.

MGM's people mover, stretching from Mandalay Bay to TI will be good for leisure travelers. It will enhance cross marketing between all the MGM and former Mandalay properties. Caesars/Harrah's shouldn't have a problem because it will increase traffic there as well. I assume there will be stops in the new CityCenter after it's developed which will benefit those boutique hotels and businesses.
The Monorail must be running without problems (other than financial.) I haven't read of any outages recently. The monorail should attract conventioneers going to the LVCC, but they really need to extend it to McCarran if they want to increase ridership.
I don't think that's easily doable in the case of the cable-based cars. I figured what they'd do is drag the Mandalay car out to NYNY and the Monte Carlo car out to the same point. Make people switch routes at NY-NY, or get off there and visit NY or MGM.
Interesting - my guess is that they'd replace the Mandalay cable railway with a more conventional train propelled type of tram - a cable railway is fine for small distances but wouldn't give the capacity to run half way down the strip.
Judging by where the exisitng trams are ie Mandalay/Luxor/Excalibur, Monte Carlo/Bellagio & Mirage/TI I think it would be easier to build a new tramway than to cross back and forth from the strip linkling the exisitng stations. It would also let them build each way stations at the Luxor, although the walkways to both Mandalay and Excalibur would appear to make a station here redundant I think MGM Mirage would include a station as it is sure to become a selling point for their resorts.
